Tips for your Summer Time Family photo Session
It seems like Summer weather is finally here and that means so is the start to photographers’ busy season. With warmer temperatures, more hours in the day, and less hectic schedules (hello, summer break!) Summer is a popular time to book family photos for those looking for something a little bit different than your typical photos in the Fall Foliage, and I’m here for it. There are so many benefits to scheduling your family photos in the Summer, but there are some unique challenges, too. I’m sharing some of my top tips for your family photos this Summer, to make sure you have the best session possible.
What to Bring:
Bug Spray- If you’re like me, mosquitos eat you alive this time of year, so make sure you put on bug spray before your session. This will prevent the bugs from swarming you and red welts from covering your arms. I’m also likely to make you walk through some tall grasses during your session, so this is important to make sure the ticks stay away, too.
Wagon- If you have kids, bring a wagon or stroller to help carry them to different spots for shooting. By using a wagon you’ll all be a little less sweaty than you would be if they walked or you had to carry them. This also is a great way to keep kids in one spot so I can snag some shots of you and your partner.
Sunscreen- Depending on what time of day your session is scheduled for, sunscreen may not be a bad idea, but keep in mind which sunscreen you’re using. I tend to buy mineral sunscreen for my family, but these can leave a white film on clothes and skin that will show up in pictures (and no amount of photo shopping will be able to help!). Make sure you opt for a sunscreen that won’t leave behind a white film or grease stains.
Water and Snacks- Make sure you have some water and snacks with you, to prevent anyone from getting too hot or hangry. Just remember to avoid foods that will stain clothes, hands or mouths, when choosing snacks. It’s also never a bad idea to bring some mini marshmallows to motivate your kids during their session, or suckers for after the session (these can also be super helpful in getting uncooperative kids/toddlers to smile!)
2. What to Wear:
Light, breathable fabrics- Make sure to choose fabrics that allow for movement and air. When it’s hot out, the last thing you want to wear are clothes that stick to your body or trap in heat. The lighter and more breathable the fabric, the more comfortable you’ll be during your session, which will come through in photos!
Colors that hide sweat marks- Patterned clothing, light colored neutrals, and darker colored fabrics can all help hide any sweat marks on clothing. (That being said, if any family members are big sweaters, it’s not a bad idea to bring a towel :))
Watches, hair ties, athletic/pool sandals- Okay, this is actually a what NOT to wear. Make sure any watches, accessories, or sandals you wear don’t distract from your family’s overall style (Crocs and Tevas, I’m looking at you). A good rule of thumb is, if you wear it to the pool, please don’t wear it to your session.
3. What to do (and what not to do) the day before/day of your session:
DO consider treating yourself to a mani/pedi. Yes, your nails will likely show up in multiple images, so keep that in mind when choosing polish colors. I always recommend (you guessed it) neutral colors.
DON’T spend the entire day at the pool prior to your session. I know, you’re not going to like this one, but hear me out. 1) Sunburn is nearly impossible to edit out of images. 2) Tired, worn out kids = cranky kids. Maybe it’s just my daughter, but I know nothing tires her out and requires an early bedtime more than a day at the pool or beach, which isn’t ideal when your sunset session starts after 6 pm.
DO make sure your kids (and the adults!) get some down time before the session. We’re going to likely be out in the sun, so taking a break indoors for an hour or so leading up to the session is always a good idea, if possible!
DON’T eat popsicles or treats that stain lips/mouths (Also, a sugary treat may seem like a good option before your session, but I suggest waiting until after your session to avoid any sugar high or crash during your family photos.)
