5 reasons you should Consider Spring Photos

The Millard Family | Ault Park, Cincinnati | Family Photographer

Listen, I know. Everyone always want to wait and book their family photos in the Fall, and believe me, I LOVE the Fall as much as the next basic b*. But, as a photographer, there are a lot of reasons I think you should consider Spring photos, instead. Hear me out:

1: Flowers (obviously).

Fall foliage is beautiful- IF you can get it. Fall is tricky. You never quite know when the leaves will change, when the colors will be at their peak, or how long they’ll stay that way before everything turns brown. This past Fall was a pretty big disappointment, in terms of colorful leaves. Everything stayed green throughout most of October and when the leaves finally changed, we only had a week or two of those gorgeous Fall colors. Flowers, though? They last all Spring into the Summer. You don’t need to worry quite as much about when to schedule your photos because from April on, there are gorgeous flowers throughout all of our parks. If you wait for October, you’re going to have to pick a date and just hope for the best.

2: Spring Clothes.

If you’re anything like me, Spring rolls around and you realize you have nothing to wear (your kid probably doesn’t either because they grew two sizes since the last time they wore a t-shirt). If you're going to be shopping for new clothes anyway, it’s a great time to pick out new outfits for family photos. Spring fabrics and silhouettes are gorgeous and Spring color palettes photograph beautifully (think cream, soft greens, blush, etc.). Just remember to try to stick to earth tones/deeper hues, rather than super bright, neon, or pastel hues. And if you need suggestions, I have entire shopping lists created of Spring clothes I’m currently drooling over.

3: Longer Days.

We have more hours of daylight in the Spring, which means more time for sessions. The sun sets later in the Spring than it does in the Fall, which makes weekday sessions easier to pull-off. No more fighting for one of your photographer’s coveted weekend sunset spots or settling for a mid-day session. Worried about what that later sunset means for your little one and bedtime? Early evening light is still gorgeous and so is Sunrise (Sunrise sessions are some of my favorites).

4: Less crowded parks.

The best spots for photos are PACKED in the Fall. I know you know what I’m talking about. You show up to meet your photographer for your October session and there are at least 5 other photographers/families already there. Since fewer people book photos in the Spring we won’t have to ‘fight’ over the good spots at the most popular parks. (Although, if you don’t have your heart set on a certain park/location, let’s chat about that, too. I have a whole list of scouted locations that are off the beaten path :))

5: AVAILABILITY.

You don’t want to hear this, but your photographer is overbooked for the Fall. (Ok, obviously I can only speak for myself here, but I’m yet to meet another photographer who isn’t crazy busy come mid-October.) We don’t mean to overbook ourselves, and every year we say we won’t do it again, but then October rolls around, we’ve already hit our max number of sessions, someone reaches out begging to work with us, and sure, of course we can fit one more session in!

Now, don’t get me wrong. I won’t take on more than I can handle, and my client experience will ALWAYS be a top priority, but I also hate turning people away, and so every Fall I fill in every possible slot I can. In the Spring though? I can breathe. What does this mean for you? For starters, it means more scheduling options, as I’m not booked to capacity. And the real draw for clients? Quicker turn-around time. My editing list in the Spring is likely closer to 7 galleries at a time than 15 (at one point this past Fall my editing que was 25 families deep…) which means you’re not waiting as long for your final images.

So? Did I convince you that Spring is better than Fall? (yup, I said it…) The start of Spring always has me dying to get out there and shooting again, so what are you waiting for? Let’s do it :)
